Eerie Elective Eye Surgery

A patient unsatisfied with her Lasik surgery recently published an article in the NYT describing her ordeal. There is a major profit motive involved in doctors recommending this procedure (meaning that it will be performed on more patients than necessary or advisable), and the scary-sounding risks of the surgery (whether technically successful or not) completely underscore my conviction that I will never voluntarily have lasers shot in my eyes.

While definitely a freak accident, let us not forget that the ocean is indeed nature, inhabited by undomesticated animals, and that a perch on a boat is no guarantee of safety.
