3 New Quotes for E-Mail Signature

"What’s clear is the BlackBerry prayer position - head bowed, hands together, thumbs going - is a solipsistic emblem of our age."

Roger Cohen, NYT 11-22-07

I work in one of the largest office buildings in downtown Miami. It is also one of the loneliest places in town. A significant percentage, if not the majority, of people I physically encounter on a daily basis are on either writing, reading or talking on blackberries or cellular phones. An odd sense of seeming urgency, inflated egos and remoteness is in the air at such times. While the article attacks e-mail in general, I must agree with its sentiments overall.

* "If he's as big as you say, then when he goes down the merger will be approved...We're looking for the illusion of due diligence. Two criminal acts successfully prosecuted gives us that illusion."

Bennett Holiday in "Syriana"

I have written about this movie before, and continue to be endlessly fascinated by it. While the screenplay is incredible, it is hard to find good quotes for e-mail signature purposes. I love how in this one he uses the word “illusion”.

* "Culture is a set of moral demands - 'deeply graven interdicts, etched in superior and trustworthy characters'. This is why it makes sense to describe the United States today as a 'cultureless society'. It is a society in which nothing is sacred and therefore, nothing is forbidden".

Christopher Lasch, "The Revolt of the Elites"

Some of his previous writings are incredibly prescient about societal trends to come. This book, which came out in 1992 and was his last, is a collection of essays and as such lacks a certain sense of coherence. The only other book of his I have read, “The Culture of Narcissism”, is probably his most classic work.

E-Cards: No Longer Quite as Free

In that she is still in the early stages of learning how to maneuver on that fabled information superhighway, I thought to send my mom an e-card for her birthday this year.

Unfortunately, e-cards on Yahoo are no longer free, nor are they on a variety of other sites as well. A displeasing yet unsurprising development. I ended up using www.e-cards.com
