New Art For New Office

In the near future, I will be getting an office in a newly-constructed expansion space. It should be pretty sweet. * * * After official papers, diplomas, honors and accolades, there will be wall room for just one piece of my own choosing. Despite the more staid conventions of my profession, the choices have been narrowed down to the following images...

Baking Soda Solves Dental Distress

For the past month, I have been struggling with how (short of professional help) to get rid of some unsightly, mysterious stains on my front teeth. I have no idea how they got there, the whitening products I had tried were not doing much, and I was more hesitant to smile than usual.
* * *
As of tonight, however, the problem has been solved, via the simple remedy of baking soda! I just moistened the tip of a rolled up paper towel, dipped it in baked soda and rubbed on the affected area.
* * *
Pleasingly enough, the stains are gone. The tetracycline discoloration and my skepticism about teeth whitening procedures (namely, that they will look too white and artificial) remain.

3 Big Scandals

Saturday, April 15, 2006

Three SCANDALS have made the headlines and have all spawned wide ranging investigations, running from influence peddling in the Capitol, surveillance of movie stars and improperly profiting from one's power as a member of the press. As far as I understand them, please allow me to attempt to explain their backgrounds and significance.
***

Jack Abramoff - this former power-lobbyist gave so many million$ to so many people throughout the D.C. establishment, it is unknown how far the unsavory allegations may spread. Abramoff recently pled guilty to fraud charges to an unrelated case in south Florida relating to the purchase of the SunCruz casino boat line, and faces sentencing for addiitonal fraud and tax evasion charges in D.C. His minimum sentence in the SunCruz case, of 5 years and 10 months, is the result of a reduction he received in exchange for singing about the D.C. political stuff.
***
Anthony Pelicano - as far as California goes, this is huge. Pelicano is a private investigator who has been employed by a wide range of big Hollywood types, and current investigations involve phone tapping, surreptitious recordings and the less savory side of show business. Currently incarcerated for weapons charges, the ever-widening investigation into this case threatens to ensnare potentially anyone in Hollywood as the sordid details become known.
***
Page Six - in a sense this is just about a gossip reporter who allegedly tried to shake down a rich guy in exchange for not writing negative stories about him; there is, apparently, video of meetings between the two. While this certainly does not have as wide-ranging implications as the 2 scandals above, as a gossip devotee it is must-read material. In particular, there have been (in publications other than NY Post) a few in-depth, behind-the-scenes articles as how the business works.

A Phrase I Detest

Has anyone else noticed the insidious infusion over the past few years of the phrase "it is what it is" into the general lexicon? *** Not only is this phrase a tautology (e.g. "the sky is blue because...the sky is blue"), it also has undertones of dismissiveness (I don't care what you say), laziness (I don't want to take the effort to respond to you) and, ultimately, is meaningless *** Guess who is the apparent originator of this folksy witticism? Contrary to the article, the phrase has nothing to do with courage or confidence but rather is reflective of trepidation and fear. I never thought I would link to the Rev. Moon-owned Washington Times, but that's what web searches are for.

W's Doublespeak Dumbs Down Nation

Writers Guild of America's TOP 10 Screenplays of All Time

IT would appear that "Annie Hall" (1977) is the most recent movie in the Top 10. In other words, no movie from the last 28+ years made the list. Is that more a function of how movies have changed (e.g. more focus on blockbusters and special effects) or the individual talent of the writers making the Top 10???

*** TOP 10 List ***
1. Casablanca (Julius J. & Philip G. Epstein and Howard Koch)
2. The Godfather (Mario Puzo and Francis Ford Coppola)
3. Chinatown (Robert Towne)
4. Citizen Kane (Herman Mankiewicz and Orson Welles)
5. All About Eve (Joseph L. Mankiewicz)
6. Annie Hall (Woody Allen and Marshall Brickman)
7. Sunset Boulevard (Charles Brackett & Billy Wilder and D.M. Marshman Jr.)
8. Network (Paddy Chayefsky)
9. Some Like It Hot (Billy Wilder & I.A.L. Diamond)
10. The Godfather Part II (Mario Puzo and Francis Ford Coppola)

Gators #1 !!!

While I don't usually like watching blow-outs, I really enjoyed the NCAA championship game last night. It was a straight-up ass whupping by Florida, with 13 dunks in the game.
Congratulations to Coach Donovan and the University of Florida Men's Basketball team!
